Your pool is a vital part of your home, providing a place for relaxation, exercise, and socializing. However, over time, the surface of your pool can become stained, chipped, or cracked, detracting from its beauty and reducing its lifespan. That's where pool resurfacing comes in. By resurfacing your pool, you can give it a new lease of life, restoring its beauty, and ensuring it remains functional for years to come. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the nitty-gritty of pool resurfacing and discuss everything you need to know to make an informed decision.

What is Pool Resurfacing?

Pool resurfacing is a process of removing the old surface of the pool and replacing it with a new one. The surface can be made of plaster, quartz, or pebble. The primary objective of pool resurfacing is to restore the aesthetics and functionality of the pool. It can also help prevent leaks, cracks, and other damages to the pool.

Types of Pool Resurfacing

There are three primary types of pool resurfacing methods: plaster, quartz, and pebble. Plaster is the most common method and is relatively inexpensive. Quartz is more durable and longer-lasting than plaster, but it is more expensive. Pebble is the most expensive option, but it is also the most durable and offers a unique aesthetic.

Benefits of Pool Resurfacing

Pool resurfacing offers several benefits that include restoring the pool's aesthetics, improving functionality, and preventing leaks and damages. It can also increase the pool's value, extend its lifespan, and reduce maintenance costs.

Why is Pool Resurfacing Necessary?

There are several reasons why pool resurfacing may be necessary, including:

  1. Damage to the pool surface - Over time, the surface of your pool can become damaged due to exposure to the elements, chemical imbalances, and general wear and tear. This can result in stains, chips, and cracks, which not only detract from the pool's appearance but can also make it unsafe to use.

  2. Outdated design - If your pool is several years old, it may have an outdated design that no longer fits with your aesthetic preferences. Resurfacing your pool can give it a fresh new look that complements your home's style.

  3. Increased lifespan - By resurfacing your pool, you can extend its lifespan and ensure it remains in good condition for years to come.

Factors to Consider when Choosing a Pool Resurfacing Method

Choosing the right pool resurfacing method can be challenging. Several factors need to be considered, such as budget, durability, maintenance, and aesthetic. Additionally, the type of pool, location, and climate are also essential factors that should be considered before choosing a method.

Signs that Your Pool Needs Resurfacing

Several signs indicate that your pool requires resurfacing. These include cracks in the pool surface, roughness, discoloration, and stains. Additionally, if your pool has not been resurfaced for over ten years, it is time to consider resurfacing.

Steps Involved in Pool Resurfacing

Pool resurfacing involves several steps that include draining the pool, removing the old surface, preparing the pool, and applying the new surface. It is a complex process that requires a professional contractor with experience in pool resurfacing.

Pool Crack Repair

Sometimes the damage to a pool's structure goes beyond the top surface. It can be located in the gunite or foundation of the pool creating a possible leak. If this happens, we can repair the crack and resurface the entire pool according to the damage.

We will clean the pool by acid washing it, to make sure the cracks are visible. We recommend allowing us to do it as muriatic acid cause harmful fumes and burns on the skin. Then, we will check the side and floor of the pool by tapping on it to find hollow spots. A hollow spot is plaster that has started to peel away from the gunite.

The loose plaster is then removed and the plaster is cleaned once again. We install custom staples with epoxy injections and a bond coat if applicable. After cracks are fixed it's time to add the new coat of plaster.

Methods Of Resurfacing

A pool resurfacing takes up to 4 days to complete, including pool prep and dry time. The most common way to resurface a pool is by leaving the existing surface and putting the new coat of plaster on top. The pool has to be drained, acid washed & primed. The second method is by Hydro-Demo or removing the existing surface all the way down to the gunite. Once resurfaced it has to immediately start the fill up process. Many companies decide to "start up" the pool chemicals a process known as "hot start" meaning they will add high amounts of acid and let it sit for a couples of days. That can actually cause damage to your new surface. We use a process known as Langelier Saturation Index (LSI) which will determine if your water is aggressive/corrosive, balanced, or scale forming. Chemicals are added as pool is filling up to minimize damage to the new surface.
